Orders From Mars by Krowne
The most recent release from the excellent Black Lantern netlabel, Orders From Mars is a magnificent exercise in vintage analogue techno and battered instrumental hip-hop for the sci-fi curious.
Krowne builds rolling grooves on stuttering drum machines, and generates an electromagnetic glow of hazy synths and crackling loops. There’s a thick woolen thread of blissful fuzz woven around the kinetic machinery of these songs. They climb the hairs on the back of your neck and tumble to your shoes and socks.
Orders From Mars is, to my ears, a love-letter to neglected genres. It evokes the nostalgic conviction of being weightless in a one-man capsule whilst actually being off your cock in a festival tent.
