It’s been a busy year in Clinksell; two versions of one album 12 months ago, a Royal Wedding Souvenir LP and now easily the most accomplished Moon Wiring Club album has arrived, the magnificently titled Clutch It Like A Gonk.

While every MWC outing has been faithful to the blueprint of “confusing English electronic music”, Clutch It Like A Gonk appears to be rewiring the conventions of acid house through the buzzing transistors and valves of haunting public service broadcasts and forgotten television dramas.

You’ve all been watching Frozen Planet, right?

I’ve really come late to Elliott Smith. You ever get that, where everyone bigs an artist up so much that you just ignore it because it cannot every possibly meet the expectation? So I never really made the effort.

Anyway, a couple of months ago Fresh Meat started on C4, and this song made an appearance and it was so lovely I had to find out who it was. Elliott Smith. Gorgeous song, can’t stop playing it right now.

And no, having investigated Mr. Smith’s output, I don’t adore him the way so many do; that’s fine, I don’t have to. I can enjoy his music without the fanatic devotion. That said, Waltz #2 is damn near perfect.

Vroooommm!

I have been loving every little tease of the WU LYF hype machine since HEAVY POP first came screaming down my headphones. This is Dirt, from the forthcoming debut LP Go Tell Fire To The Mountain. It’s good. It’s not the blitzkrieg promised by previous outings, which at this point in the game does not surprise.

Worryingly, though, it feels like some kind of 21st Century successor to Happy Mondays. Could just be me, but that is a pretty grim portent.

The Dark Power is working on HOT SHIT for Tom Slatter’s new song, Beast Of The Air. Mr Slatter is currently recording his second solo album, Ironbark.

Nothing on James Blake’s eponymous debut comes close to his inaugural EPs for Hemlock, Hessle and R&S; those were all thrilling works of a budding genius, and as much as I enjoy the singer-songwriter side of Blake, it’s just not as interesting to me. Sorry everyone.

This performance of the album’s highlight, The Wilhelm Scream, however, is a fascinating bit of performance, and the steadily increasing reverb and drone is blissful.
